You can look forward to six festival films — from the biographical drama Chhapaak to the award-winning Village Rockstars, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Chhapaak
In this drama inspired by real events, Bollywood star Deepika Padukone plays the role of Malti, a student whose life is altered when a disappointed suitor throws acid on her face. Malti, who used to be carefree, has to learn a new balance between her physical and psychological ailments, a complicated judiciary process and her personal problems. In spite of this she relentlessly tries to help other victims of acid throwing and she pushes for legislative changes to forbid this kind of atrocious crimes in the future.
Jawaani Jaaneman
Jaswinder (Saif Ali Khan), a London real estate broker, is a middle-aged man but his lifestyle resembles that of a teenager. His nights are spent in bars and he chain-dates women without any desire to settle down. One day, though, he encounters Tia (newcomer Aalia Furniturewala), who convinces herself that Jaswinder could be her long-lost father. All of a sudden, the carefree fun-loving man is called by duty and has to take care of his family. This well-behaved dramatic comedy has received a positive welcome by critics and film amateurs, who like it for being refreshing and heart-warming.
Chhichhore
Anni (Sushant Singh Rajput) is professionally successful. She has to reassess her priorities in life as her son Raghav (Mohammad Samad) tries to kill himself after failing the entrance exam to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology. While Raghav is hospitalized in serious condition, Anni tells him the story of herself and her long-time friends from the infamous H4 university residence. Behind the narration of many funny stories lies the idea that one has to learn how to even out life’s most dire failings.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan
This light-hearted foolish comedy follows the classical motive of a family reunion for a wedding, where nothing goes as planned. The viewers then half expect to see the fiancée elope on a horse, a black cauliflower ignite a protest, a direct reference to the decriminalization of homosexuality in India and above all a same-sex couple, the submissive Aman (Jitendra Kumar) and the eccentric Kartik (Ayushmann Khurrana), who must defend their love against Aman’s conservative family who’d much rather see their son marry one of their acquaintances from a naive family.
Bulbul Can Sing
In this movie, the skillful filmmaker Rima Das, builds on her previous work Village Rockstars (2017) both stylistically and thematically. This time she follows a group of three teenagers, who are searching for their own identity and establishing their first romantic relationships in the Assamese countryside, where society has no understanding for differences from the dated moral views. The main character is a fifteen-year-old girl Bulbul, who is not very successful in fulfilling her father’s wish to become a singer.
Village Rockstars
In a small village in northeast India, 10-year-old Dhunu dreams of having her own rock band. Her vibrant spirit, imagination and self-assurance stand out in a world where girls are expected to be timid and submissive. With her gang of boys and the support of her widowed mother, Dhunu faces the struggles of her daily life and hopes for the day she can finally play on a real guitar. Written, edited, co-produced and directed by Rima Das, who is a self-taught filmmaker.
