This over the top melodrama is part of a long term Bollywood trend known as historical fantasy. The plot is set during real historical events just before India’s liberation and separation but the extravagant baroque scenery the movie presents is not trying to reflect the historical reality but more to impress the spectators’ senses. Instead of big historical events, the film concentrates on the intertwined dramatic fates of a few characters.
