This fi ctional story is based on the real situation in poor rural India, where a growing number of farmers are committing suicides due to their debts. Natha and his brother Budhia are unable to pay off their mortgage to the bank, and therefore decide that Natha will have to commit suicide, thus insuring that his family receives the compensation given in such cases by the government. But their plan is overheard by journalist Rakesh. The village Peepli is soon invaded by journalists, Natha‘s story is broadcast all over India and life in the village is turned upside down. Journalists, politicians and businesspeople seek to exploit Natha‘s situation to their advantage, but nobody is concerned about Natha himself. Peepli Live is the fi rst Indian fi lm submitted at the Sundance Festival.
