Globalizing Bollywood

Bollywood is a colloquial term that describes the commercial Hindi language film industry based in Bombay (Mumbai), India. With more than 800 film released every year, India produces more films than any other country. Millions of people from Los Angeles to Kabul see the films everyday.

Colorful, songs, dances, comedic subplots, and drawn out fight sequences complement non-linear narrative structures that encourage people to suspend their disbelief and participate.

The economic liberalization implemented in India in the 1990s changed the face of Indian film as the industry moved aggressively to claim new markets outside Indian. More than a decade later, Bollywood is fast becoming truly global entertainment industry with focused on challenging Hollywood’s supremacy. This is an exciting time in Bollywood.

The Prague Bollywood Festival strives to acquaint Czech and foreign audiences in the Czech Republic with the history and current global appeal of the industry. Started four years ago by three film enthusiasts, the festival has grown from its humble beginnings at the Czech Film Academy (FAMU) into a full-blown Bollywood extravaganza in the heart of Prague featuring films, discussions, parties, poster-exhibitions, interior decorators, and Indian restaurants. We continue to be supported by the Czech Ministry of Culture and Indian Embassy.

Based on the overwhelmingly positive experience our festival has had over the three years, we plan to grow substantially in 2006 as we focus specifically on “Globalizing Bollywood”.

Guests: In response to enthusiasm expressed by Bollywood and other film-makers, we are focusing on inviting select guests to attend this years festival to comment and reflect on featured films. The guests will also explore the Czech Republic as a possible site of Indian film pre and postproduction.
